Role of PIs and Research Leaders in Supporting Researcher Development
The University is committed to creating a healthy, collegiate and supportive research environment in which research staff can thrive, develop and carry out excellent research. Every PI and leader of a research team plays a vital role in creating that environment. Information about relevant resources, support and further information for PIs is provided here.
Supporting Researcher Development - Three Steps for PIs
Whether leading and managing a team of postdocs or a single researcher there are three steps that all PIs and leaders can take to support the researchers.
-
Be aware of and raise awareness of the Researcher Development Concordat and the University’s Career Development of Research Staff Statement of Expectations.
-
Discuss and encourage researchers to undertake professional development opportunities. Examples include attending training and conferences, participating in a mentoring scheme, committee membership, participating in policy development, public engagement, or knowledge exchange activities.
-
Share your networks and signpost to additional sources of support such as the Research Development Team and Staff Learning and Development.

PI Working Group and Toolkit
The Researcher Development team is coordinating a PI working group comprised of PIs and managers of researchers from across all three Faculties.
The working group with the support of Staff, Learning and Development will be working on the development of the content for a PI toolkit over the coming months. The aim of the toolkit is to enable and support PIs and leaders of research teams in their roles.
If you would like to be involved in any way in this group please contact ResDev@manchester.ac.uk for further information.
Induction Checklist for PIs and Managers of Research Staff
Research staff make a significant contribution to the work of the University and providing a welcome and formal induction ensures that their research journey gets off to the best possible start. In addition to the University induction documents and welcome events PIs may also find the induction checklist specifically for research staff a useful guide.
